The old town deserves the utmost attention to be visited and discover its legends, old buildings and monuments that make its history.

The first legend is linked to the sickle-shaped plan. It tells the story of Cerer, the goddess of the earth and fertility. Whilerunning around the world on a chariot driven by winged servants in search of her daughter Proserpine, who had been kidnapped by Pluto, she dropped her sickle. The myth goes that Drepanon was born, the city of the two seas, the Meditteranean and the Tyrrenian that come together right by the Lgny Watch tower.

Wandering around its streets you will be able to admire the remains of the Arabian and Spanish invasions.

You ‘ll be able to visit San Lorenzo’ds Cathedral, located in the heart of the town centre in Corso Vittorio Emanuele. It was built in 1421 thanks to Alfonso di Aragona, the Spanish Prince of the Aragonese family.

While strolling around you’ll catch a glimpse of the Church of the souls of Purgatory, built in 1688 which keeps in its heart the 20 sculptures of the holy procession of the Misteri. Something not to be missed.

You’ll discover the magnificent Palazzo Senatorio (Senate Palace), known as Palazzo Cavarretta, which was built on the old Loggia dei Pisani in 1425. Next to it you’ll see Porta Oscura, one of the town gates and the Clock Tower, which keeps the oldest astronomical clock in Europe.

You can discover the old fish market square, one of the oldest in town well known as “ a chiazza”, which for a very long time represented a place where grown-ups and children gathered together togethergiving life to the local fish-market. In the centre it stands out thestatue of Venus Anadiomene which portrays the Goddess Aphroditis.
