Mazara del Vallo Tour
Closer to the Tunisian coast than to other cities in Sicily itself, Mazara del Vallo is a city belonging to the Trapani municipal consortium. Its proximity to Tunisia has strongly influenced the city over the centuries, as can be seen from the narrow streets in the centre, which can be associated with those typical of Islamic medinas.
The history of Mazara is told by the monuments and architecture that we can find as we walk through this beautiful city.
One of the attractions is undoubtedly the Church of San Francesco, the most famous and visited of the iconic city's churches and historical buildings. Over the years, it has undergone many changes. First it was built on top of another church, with an Arab-Norman architectural style, and later, around 1690, it became a typical example of Baroque architecture, with the naves and its façade being altered.
Another must-see is the Cathedral of the Santissimo Salvatore, called by some 'the most baroque church in Sicily'. It too was built on the ruins of an ancient Saracen basilica and what amazes visitors to this mighty work is the fresco on the central dome depicting the Last Judgement. This building is truly remarkable and will amaze you.
To tell us about the union of the people, we have the small but cosy Garibaldi Theatre, one of the most important historical theatres in Sicily. Following the revolutionary uprisings of 1848 and the handover of power from the Bourbons to a citizens' committee, they decided that the city of Mazara del Vallo needed a new theatre-cultural centre, which could be a meeting place and a place of entertainment for its citizens. So they decided to build this theatre in just three months, using funds allocated for the maintenance of the city harbour, and it was inaugurated in 1949 under the common name 'Teatro del Popolo'.
You will discover this and much more during your excursion to Mazara del Vallo.
