Valley of the Temples Agrigento and the Scala dei Turchi
Agrigento is a town that manages to enrapture everyone's heart. As soon as you arrive in this city, you can admire the marvellous Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, you can discover the small historical centre with its houses built with large bricks of local calcarenite and with lots of steps, as it is a city on a hill and, last but not least, you can take a bath in the cold waters of the Scala dei Turchi.
The Valley of the Temples is one of the largest, best-preserved and most representative archaeological sites of the splendid classical Greek civilisation, a pearl of history that tells of eras far away from us. In 1998, it was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This helps us to understand its importance and beauty. This area corresponds to the remains of ancient Akragas, in which the mighty remains of Doric temples dedicated to the Hellenic gods emerge, and within the area there is also the Museo Archeologico Regionale Pietro Griffo, which houses 5688 artefacts showing from prehistoric times to the end of the Greco-Roman era.
The Scala dei Turchi is equally well known, forged by the waves and wind over millions of years and for having served as a set for many famous films with its white marl walls. It takes this name because of its stepped wall, as if it were a staircase, which made it very easy to land from the sea for pirate actions, at that time carried out by Saracen pirates.
A sight not to be missed.
